Neurological complications of HIV-infection

Abstract

Neurological disorders are widely observed in patients with HIV-infection, they occur both as manifestation of HIV-infection by itself and as a result of opportunistic infections both, or due to antiretroviral drugs toxicity. Despite the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), these complications lead to signifi cant morbidity and mortality, and that is why the central nervous system (CNS) affection is still an important issue. This article presents the clinical and laboratory data analysis of neurological complications caused by HIV-infection. There are several distinctive features in course, clinics and diagnostic fi ndings, which directly depend on the etiology of the CNS lesion. We hope, this study will be useful for practicing doctors while making diff erential diagnosis of the neurological complications and providing adequate treatment for HIV-infected patients.
