Formation of modern requirements for the quality of dietary supplements containing lutein

Abstract

Lutein and zeaxanthin are xanthophyll carotenoids that play a key role in protecting the macular area of the retina from photochemical damage and oxidative stress. They are not synthesized in the human body and must be supplied with food or as part of dietary supplements. At the same time, the effectiveness of nutraceuticals with lutein largely depends on the quality of raw materials, the accuracy of dosing, and the use of validated analytical control methods. In conditions of insufficiently strict regulatory supervision over the circulation of dietary supplements in Ukraine, it is relevant to form scientifically based requirements for their quality, close to pharmacopoeial approaches. The aim of the work was to theoretically substantiate the draft specification and determine modern methods for quality control of a dietary supplement containing lutein and zeaxanthin.
